Upcoming Manitowoc County Genealogical Society Meeting

Tuesday, January 14, 2020, 6pm in the Balkansky Room, Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., Manitowoc, WI

We will have a fun program “Share Your Treasures”, where members bring in a treasured family object and tell us its story.  It’s  kind of like Antiques Roadshow but without the appraisal.  The program is free and open to the public.

We also offer “Genealogy Help” on Tuesdays from 3pm – 5pm in the local history area of Manitowoc Public Library.

Manitowoc County Genealogical Society Meeting, Tuesday, November 12, 2019, 6:00pm Program: “Finding Those Who Served: Military Genealogy” with Russell Horton of the Wisconsin Veteran’s Museum. The meeting will be in the Balkansky Room, Manitowoc Public Library 707 Quay St., Manitowoc, WI. The Public is welcome.

Russ Horton is the Reference & Outreach Archivist at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, where he helps researchers ranging from genealogists to professional historians learn about the stories of Wisconsin veterans. He will discuss the best methods and resources for researching the veteran in your family tree.

in the Balkansky Room at Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., Manitowoc, WI.  Our program centers around a small town, and an intriguing mystery.  Centerville holds title to one of the earliest murders in Manitowoc County.  Join us as Kirsten Husband uncovers “The Centerville Sensation—The Murder of 1851”.

“The Manitowoc County Genealogical Society will meet at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2019 in the Board Room at Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., Manitowoc, WI.  Our program for the evening will be “London Pearlies”, with Laurie Shawhan. What started out in the mid 1800’s in London as a sales gimmick evolved into an extraordinary charitable organization.  “London Pearlies”  always make a striking and well-recognized showing at many functions throughout London and thereabout.  Have you seen Mary Poppins ?   Come learn about London’s famous society.  MCGS also offers genealogy help on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Local History Area of the Manitowoc Public Library.”

Look for our MCGS Volunteer in the new Local History Area located on the main level of the library on the south wall by the windows, next to the Franklin Room. (Look for the microfilm readers.) Many items of interest are already in that area. If you can’t find something please ask our volunteer or a reference desk associate.

Manitowoc Public Library Remodel Update: Microfilm Machines & Microfilm Collections will not be available Fri.-Sun., May 10-12, 2019.

Books from the Manitowoc Collection are temporarily located where the Mystery Books were previously located, west of the main patron use computers. The new home of the Manitowoc Collection will be at the east end of the present Teen area. (The Teen area will also be moved to a new location.) There are maps posted in various locations  in the library for more details.

The Manitowoc County Genealogical Society will meet at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019 in the Balkansky Room at Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., Manitowoc, WI.  The program will be  “It’s All Online!  Or Is It!” with Lori Bessler, genealogy and local history specialist, Wisconsin Historical Society’s Library, Archives and Museum Collections division.  Learn about valuable web sites, making the most of your online searches, and how to organize your online research.  If you’re interested in researching your family this is a program not to miss.  The public is welcome to attend.
